LlamaPockets and LaughingMan have a sit down to each trade war stories with five games that have had the most positive or profound effect on their lives. Whether it was a game that changed the landscape of gaming, a game that shattered their minds, or a game that gave them inspiration to pursue life-long goals, we give our top 10 games that changed our lives. Most of the games are fairly popular, and come as no surprise, as they’re well established in the gaming cultural zeitgeist and have had similar affects on millions of gamers world-wide. However, the reasons why these games have had such an impact on them individually may leave you wondering which games left a permanent impression on you?

We play Friday the 13th: The Game with our supporters. Nat is the first of us to put on Jason’s hockey mask. But while she hunts down the teenagers at Crystal Lake, LlamaPockets puts on Chad’s sweater of comfort. Meanwhile, LaughingMan plays as a goth girl with a nice booty. After Nat’s inevitable win, LlamaPockets becomes a particularly sadistic Jason Vorhees as he taunts us over our Discord App chat. It’s up to LaughingMan to put his boomer skills to the test and survive against his long-time best friend. Can he out-maneuver Jason in Friday the 13th: The Game?

Nat builds a Silent Hill 2 inspired 3D level in Unity, based primarily on Silent Hill’s Brookhaven Hospital. Her goal is to create a 3D survival horror level in Unity, and have people play using one of several sets of camera types (fixed, first person, third person over-the-shoulder) to test how cameras affect the sense of unease. Do fixed, cinematic cameras like the original Silent Hill games and the Resident Evil Playstation trilogy convey a higher sense of dread than character-based perspectives? That’s what she intends to find out.

Thanks largely to other YouTube gaming personalities, we’ve seen numerous videos and lists of bad video games. And while several of the games on our own list of Guilty Pleasure Video Games make repeat appearances on those “worst video games of all time” videos and lists, LaughingMan and LlamaPockets still have lots of fun with them. Whether it’s nostalgia goggles, or the games have been patched into playability, or the “professional game journalists” are talking out of the wrong hole, we still love them…

Sort of.
Kind of?

Maybe not… But we certainly still play them.

In the wake of the cancellation of the 2020 E3 convention and the Tokyo Game Show, LaughingMan and LlamaPockets are watching Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest digital convention. The creator of the Video Game Awards is putting on a great show, with more long-form discussions that they both appreciate and enjoy. After major players like Nintendo and Sony have pulled out of E3, with Nintendo long holding its own digital Tree House event, are digital conventions like the Summer Game Fest the future of game conventions? While the content is certainly more prone to longer, more in-depth looks at new games and technology (Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 Remaster, Unreal Engine 5), it could be more stale and less “meme-able” than its live, more disaster-proned predecessors.

After hearing rumors of Tetsuya Nomura (of Kingdom Hearts infamy) having a hand in the Final Fantasy VII Remake, a concerned LaughingMan cheated and, like Don Corneo, peeked up Cloud’s skirt to see the spoilers. Having played the original Final Fantasy VII, and eager to ramble about exactly how the story of the Final Fantasy VII Remake compares to the original game, he invites his long-time friend and fellow gamer, LlamaPockets, to discuss the revelations. Being notoriously bad at spoiling plot points, LaughingMan bites his tongue and waits impatiently as LlamaPockets finishes the game faster than a Netflix binge of “The Tiger King”.

And both of these Final Fantasy VII veterans have a lot to say about this long-anticipated remake of a game that each of them has played through at least 4x each.

What they discover is a game that has largely improved upon the original, but they wonder if the addition of the Whispers convolutes the plot, which has now gone off the rails.
The original Final Fantasy VII now feels like the “Sparknotes” version of this larger, fuller, and richer game.

LlamaPocket has nostalgia for Final Fantasy VII because it was his first real RPG experience, and he explains how revolutionary it was on the Playstation.
LaughingMan still defends his desire to name his first son “Vincent”, and Llama takes the piss.

We try to discuss exactly what the Whispers are, and we spin speculations of whether or not Aerith and Sepheroth are actually self-aware in the FF7 Remake of the events of the original. However, in doing so, it now appears to keep the original Final Fantasy 7 as canon.

Looking for a horror game that will run on a potato, our artist and friend, The Fuboo, plays the ‘try not to die’ indie horror game, Spirit Record. But LaughingMan and LlamaPockets are just as clueless as to what she is supposed to be doing. Every turn reveals a nasty creature and a far more horrific fate for our pixelated protagonist.

Unqualified Mars colonist, LlamaPockets, dooms future space exploration by falling from Martian cliff to test gravity, and forgets his helmet before leaving an airlock.

LlamaPockets plays “Moons of Madness” for some Mars colony science fiction horror. But if DOOM has taught us anything, what we get is pandemonium on the red planet.

After an eerie intro, LlamaPockets (aka “Sport”) finds himself alone on a derelict Mars colony, complete with demon-possessed Russian dolls, suspicious bacon-and-egg breakfast bars that make airline food look like Gordon Ramsay’s cooking, and a green screen for hosting Meme Review on YouTube. However, something creepy is happening in the station. You can tell because of the bloody tentacles that are hanging from the ceilings.

Not wanting to re-create the iconic Total Recall asphyxiation scene, we explore the Martian surface and its floaty jump mechanics, only for LlamaPockets to discover that, yes, Mars does have fall damage.

LlamaPockets tells the story of when he saw a job offering to be a fire alarm maintenance man for a base in Antarctica, and LaughingMan and Fuboo speculate how long it would be before the icecap would burn. But at least LlamaPockets would save the penguins as they belly-slide to safety.

We finally find the Mars rover, the Meerkat. After spending far too long trying to find a way in, we discover the tiny button to open the hatch. The fun ends as the game doesn’t let us pilot the Mars rover by skipping to a cut scene. It’s probably for the best, because LlamaPockets was hoping to do a sweet jump with Mars’ lower gravity.

And, in an act of forgetfulness, LlamaPockets takes off his helmet before cycling the atmosphere in the airlock, pulling a Schwarzenegger. If this game were an application for being the first on a one-way ticket to die alone on Mars, LlamaPockets fails miserably.

Wade goads a reluctant Nat into “axe + doggo” in the atmospheric top-down survival horror video game, Darkwood.

People are trapped in a dark forest as a plague kills survivors and transforming them into monsters. Nat has to craft weapons, interact with survivors, and survive beasts and abominations alike. One of her first acts in the game is to craft a weapon and, reluctantly, put down a suffering dog. Wade, however, cheers her on.

LaughingMan asks, “When will Pornhub create a SFW rival site to YouTube to counteract the rampant censorship and demonetization of YouTube Creators?” Wade and LaughingMan break down the stats of how long it took various industries to reach 50 million users. The results are shocking.

Meanwhile, Wade and LaughingMan still have the Harvest game and Wiki on their minds. One of considerations in hind-sight was to perhaps revisit Darkwood in a dark, more intimate surrounding. The game is very atmospheric and eerie, which likely isn’t best appreciated on a live stream, in a lit room, with wisecracking friends.

LaughingMan is being sadistic this Halloween. 1990s FMV games are scary enough, but nothing can prepare Nat, Wade, and Fuboo for the horrors of Harvester.

A sadistic LaughingMan makes Nat, Wade and Fuboo watch him play the insane cult classic horror game, Harvester. But nothing can prepare Nat, Wade, and Fuboo for the horror of 1990’s Full Motion Video (FMV) games.

LaughingMan disturbs Wade, Nat, and The Fuboo with a quick overview of the live-action FMV cult classic, Harvester. During the game stream, the protagonist witnesses his younger brother watch horrific violence in a cowboy television series, and watches a baby eat a spider. They recoil when LaughingMan tells them you can proposition your own mother, visit a firehouse where the firemen are gay, meet one of the creepiest neighbors on earth, watch a teacher bludgeon a child for questioning authority, and visit your incestuous soon-to-be father-in-law. Finally, as the insanity is reaching its boiling point, LaughingMan convinces an officer at a nuclear missile base to start a nuclear holocaust.

Out of morbid curiosity, Wade visits the Harvester Wiki. They discover that the only thing more horrifying than Harvester, are some of the insane happenings to the cast and developers behind the game. Several developers of the game went on to help create some of the most iconic games, like Half-life. However, we soon learn that the lead actor of Harvester, Kurt Kistler, was arrested for “CP”.

A strange and twisted world… Harvester! The most violent adventure game of all time. Harvester is a 1996 point-and-click psychological horror game. The protagonist, Steve, wakes up in the surreal town of Harvest with a case of amnesia. But even if he can’t remember his past, he knows something is horribly, horribly wrong in this dark, and ultra-violent parody of suburban America.

Harvester borders on a Lynchian, Twin Peaks-like take on the 1950s and 60s, with a poignantly violent twist. Additionally, there’s loads of branching story lines, moral choices, and disturbing secrets. The result is a dark satire of violence in the media that has found a cult following.
